Scout was found wandering in a trailer park. His finder was able to locate owners, who indicated they didn't want him anymore and had stopped feeding him. Scout's owners chose to set him loose so that he could find food, which he'd done successfully at a neighbor's house who left cat food out for the strays. In this way, his previous humans taught him to rely only on himself in this world, which largely explains why Scout is stand offish with new people. Thankfully, his finder contacted a rescue and, when a foster home became available, we welcomed this boy with open arms. Scout has been neutered, received a much needed dental, and is ready to find his forever home! Scout is a gorgeous, red dachshund mix of about 11 pounds. He's squat and long like a dachshund, with the intelligence and love of the outdoors that the breed is known for. Scout is initially timid with people, and we've discovered that he loves other dogs, so his forever home will need to have at least one dog to keep him company. Scout loves to go for walks with his foster mom, nose to the ground, exploring new smells everywhere he goes. He gets so excited when they happen upon a new dog for him to meet, an almost daily occurrence, and he eagerly greets dogs with calm respect and a wagging tail. We aren't sure Scout spent much time inside a home, so he's mastering his house and crate training and catching on quickly. We suspect he'll be fully house trained in a few weeks time thanks to his dedicated foster mom. Because of Scout's timid nature with strangers, we'd prefer to place him in an adult only household, though a home with a dog savvy older minor may be considered. Scout tends to run and hide when new people come into his home, though he enjoys receiving pets from people he sees frequently on walks. Scout is beginning to enjoy his cuddle time with his foster mom, as well. At this time, we are still getting to know Scout and he's still acclimating to his new foster home. So far, he hasn't shown interest in toys of any kind. He likes to chew cow hooves and beef marrow bones. We suspect that, as time passes (remember, it takes up to 3 months for an adult dog to feel completely at home with a new family!) we'll learn more about his personality, his likes and dislikes, and his temperament. If you are interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application. Because we expect a large number of applications, and are still understaffed due to COVID19, we will only be able to email those applicants that are approved to schedule a meet and greet. Thank you in advance for your understanding if you don't hear back from us regarding your application.
